SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) — Puerto Rican actor Miguelangel Suarez, whose career included minor roles in last year's epic "Che" and Wood Allen's "Bananas," died on Wednesday. He was 69.

Suarez died at Metropolitan Hospital in the San Juan suburb of Guaynabo, said filmmaker Jacobo Morales, a friend.

The actor's wife had previously said Suarez had esophageal cancer.

Suarez appeared in some 30 films, mostly in Spanish. But he was in several Hollywood productions as well.

He played an army doctor in "Che," starring fellow Puerto Rican Benicio del Toro, and a police superintendent in the 2000 movie "Under Suspicion," which featured Gene Hackman and Morgan Freeman.

"Miguel has been a symbol of strength, talent and tenacity and he will continue being a symbol for the Puerto Rican artistic class and an inspiration for our young actors," Morales said.

Suarez married actor Amneris Morales, his companion of the past 13 years, on Sunday at the hospital's chapel. He is also survived by his daughter, Alondra Suarez.
