KIRKSVILLE, MO. - Everyone likes a good bowl of warm chili and you can have your pick at over 20 different recipes this Saturday.

The local Jaycees will host a chili cook off to benefit the Adair County Humane Society.

“I don't think they really realize just how many animals they have and how many animals they take in every month and it's just amazing.  And most of them get adopted and go to really good homes and that's what we're trying to take care of,” said event organizer Rick Bachman.

The cost is $5 to eat all the chili you want but the fun doesn't stop there.

“We have different games going on that day.  Hot pepper eating contest, karaoke, just a lot of other stuff going on that will be a lot of fun.  We will be selling soda as well as beer.  It is an 18 and older event.  And it's a really good time,” said Bachman.

So far 21 teams are signed up which is two more than last year.

If you wish to attend, the time is from 11:00 a.m. thru 5:00 p.m. at Reger Armory in Kirksville.

They are not put down IF

Posted by Just a Towner, Kirksville - Tuesday, March 03, 2009 at 8:19 a.m.

I talked to someone involved with the organization a while back. At one time, many of the animal were put down long before they tried to find homes for them. The current manager does her best to find homes for all the animals. They don't put them down unless they are severely ill or until they run out of space. At least that is what they strive for. I encourage any & all people to donate to this worthy cause. They will also take dog/cat food donations. If everyone spayed or neutered their pet, we would have a lot fewer unwanted animals out there.

You People are Pathethic

It is an adult event. The Chili Cook off is a Jaycee's event the proceeds are going to the Humane Society. A group is trying to do something good for the community and somebody complains. The people in this town are unbelievable.

Ricks comments are totally false. Our local animal shelter does NOT find homes for MOST of the animals.

More than 50% are euthanized.

good benefit,bad stats

the benfit is for a good cause. they do take in many more animals than the public is aware of. Hoping they use the donations to expand and renovate the old buildings. Yet the statement that says that "most" are adopted out is totally false. In 2007, the KV Daily article read that 400 were adopted that year and over 1000 were euthanized. So which one of our media groups actually got the facts right before they spoke? wouldn't we all like to know the truth, in addition to how the City funds are being used.

Kids can't come?

"It is an 18 and older event." So no children are allowed to a humane society event to benefit animals?
