KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- Local college students are going to get the royal treatment this week in Kirksville.

The annual "New Student Welcome" in downtown Kirksville is this Thursday.  It's designed for those who attend Moberly Area Community College, A.T. Still University and Truman State University.

Area businesses, churches and organizations will have tables set up offering coupons, product samples and more.

"This is just a great way for students and the community to get together, for local businesses to really come out to the event and show their support of the students and just kind of bringing students and community together,” says Chamber of Commerce Project Manager Donna Brown.

Kirksville's "New Student Welcome" is from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Thursday on the south lawn of the Adair County Courthouse.  It's complete with live entertainment.  Food will be served from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. that evening.  Those who show their current Student ID get free food.

Menu prices are available for everyone else.

Students

Some of the Truman students are decent young people who are not out to cause problems or disrespect the community and some come to Kirksville with a sense of entitlement that makes many locals wish they'd go back to where they came from. The thing I hear the most is that most of the townspeople don't think the Truman students should be able to vote on issues that will not affect them once they are out of college because they will go back to St. Louis or Chicago or wherever home is. I agree with that. If they cannot call Kirksville their permanent residence then I don't think they should be able to vote here. Just does not seem right.

Enjoyment

You students are always complaining about nothing to do in this town. The whole ungrateful lot of you need to put down your nintendo, take the ipod out of your ears and attend this event. The fine citizens of Kirksville are attempting to welcome you the best way they know how. Suspend your disdain for the Kirkatoids and come out for some real fun old fashioned style.
