KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- From time to time you may see fire trucks driving around in non-emergency situations. So, for Monday’s ‘Facebook Story of the Day’, the majority of you wanted to know why?

For the Kirksville Fire Department, the main reason is because they need to be fully prepared just in case they are called out to an emergency.

“We do inspections throughout the day so, we have to have our trucks with us to be able to respond for any calls that we may have; whether its medical, car wrecks or fires,” said Jeremy Davis, a firefighter with the Kirksville Fire Department. “It's easier to have our trucks with us than to have to come back and get a truck.”

Some may notice KFD’s truck parked outside Anytime Fitness in Kirksville on a regular basis. According to the fire department, they along with all other city employees, have the option to work out either at Anytime Fitness or Adair County Family YMCA.

“It’s something the city council and its members have worked out, to help keep insurance rates down, and to help keep the whole city stay fit. It’s open to all city employees, the fire and police departments, and public works,” Davis said. “The city pays a portion of it and the employee picks up the rest of the amount.”

The city has also worked out an agreement with the fire department to allow them to work out during their shift because of the hours they work.

“The city has allowed the fire department to go workout on duty because we are here 24 hours a day,” Davis said. “Each year we do have to pass with a physical fitness test to be able to keep our jobs.”

The fire department does have a small workout gym inside their facility and firefighters can chose to work out there.
