How to Diet and Eat Great Greek Food at the Same Time....It can be done

Greek food is fabulous. It's healthy with a concentration on fresh fruits and vegetables, grains, legumes - and we have delicious meat and seafood dishes - but, generally, the calories in Greek food are not known to be especially low.

Whether you're cooking at home or going out to a Greek restaurant and want to stick to your diet, here are a few things to remember:

Go for the dry stuff. If it's dry, it isn't fried and doesn't have a sauce, and fried foods and sauces usually mean a higher calorie count. Broiled, grilled, boiled stuff is best. Look to the Greek grilling recipes and reduced or low fat Greek recipes for some great choices.

Go for the green stuff. Green is good, and Greek food is known for fabulous salads and dark leafy greens. The types and varieties of wild and cultivated greens in Greek cooking is vast and offers many wonderful choices.

Go for the yellow. Lemons, more specifically. Squeeze lemon juice on veggies, potatoes, meats, and fish, instead of using fats or cream and other sauces.

Go for low fat or non fat dairy. Yogurt, milk, and cheeses are frequently available in lower fat versions, with considerably fewer calories. If you can't live without full fat, keep quantities down.

Phyllo is great. It's got almost nothing in it, so use it to wrap the dry stuff, and the green stuff, and the low / non fat dairy stuff. And use butter flavored or olive oil cooking spray instead of brushing the phyllo sheets with butter or olive oil. Try spinach pies and cheese pies to add variety and great taste to your diet.

Go for fresh fruit or yogurt for dessert. They're good for you and keep the rest of the stuff moving through your system.

Note: These tips work for me, but they're simply one way I have learned to stick to a diet and not give up the fabulous tastes of Greek food. Weight loss requires attention to nutrition, exercise, and your overall health. If you're considering a diet, visit the About Health & Fitness sites to get the best start.
