JEFFERSON CITY, MO. -- The Missouri Department of Natural Resources has awarded $10,000 to the Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District to partially fund a project to educate and encourage landowners to properly decommission abandoned wells.

The Schuyler County well decommissioning project will take place in the North and Middle Fabius River Watershed and aims to educate citizens about groundwater contamination that may occur from pollutants entering abandoned water wells that have not been properly closed. Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District will produce educational materials and implement a best management practice demonstration, illustrating the proper procedure used to decommission old wells.

The overall goal is to get 20 landowners with abandoned wells on their property to properly decommission them through a cost-share incentive program. The cost-share program will be used to locate and fill open and unused wells according to Missouri well decommissioning regulations.

The Schuyler County Soil and Water Conservation District will provide a match contribution of $6,667 over the life of the project, bringing the total cost to $16,667. The district expects to complete this project by Sept. 14, 2014.

Partners in this collaborative effort include the University of Missouri Extension, Natural Resources Conservation Service and Missouri Department of Conservation.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, Region 7, has provided partial funding for this project under Section 319 of the Clean Water Act. The Department of Natural Resources’ Water Protection Program will administer the grant funds. The department is committed to working closely with communities and businesses to assist with funding efforts that improve water quality in Missouri. For more information, contact the Water Protection Program at P.O. Box 176, Jefferson City, MO 65102 or call 800-361-4827 or 573-751-1300.
