Richard Coates
1927 – 2012

Richard “Dick” Coates passed away on Saturday, December 15, 2012, in his home in Kirksville, MO.  He is survived by his wife, Mary Coates, his daughter, Debbie Read, his son, Bob Coates, along with five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  He is also survived by his brother, Dennis Coates, and his sister, Beverly Locke.  He was preceded in death by his brother Ronald Coates.

For sixty four years Richard was a loving husband to Mary.  There was never a husband who loved his wife more than Richard loved Mary.

Richard lived in Marseilles, Illinois until he was sixty years old.  Before enlisting in the Coast Guard, where he patrolled the north Atlantic until the end of WWII, Richard and his brother Ronald played for the only Marseilles High School basketball team to qualify for the Illinois State Championship Tournament.

After retiring from forty plus years working for Nabisco, Richard and Mary moved to Kirksville, Missouri where he had the time and opportunity to pursue woodworking, a lifelong passion.  He built furniture and other crafts that will grace homes with beauty and craftsmanship for many years to come.

The world is a lesser place without Richard.  He shared his love, spirit, and generosity with everybody who had the privilege to know him, and he will be forever missed.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 p.m. at Mary Immaculate Catholic Church with Father Chris Cordes officiating. Entombment will be in Park View Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.
