Neva Slaughter, age 89, of Queen City, passed away at Kirksville Manor Care on December 4, 2012.
The daughter of Robert and Letha (Maggart) Williams, she was born on May 28, 1923 near Milan, MO. On October 30, 1948, Neva was united in marriage to James “Jim” Slaughter in Kirksville.
Neva is survived by her daughter, Marilyn Miller and husband Marvin of Queen City and two grandchildren, Dana Bartels and husband Roland of Palmyra, and Jason Miller and wife Rebecca of Columbia, MO. She is also survived by four great grandchildren, Madalyn and Natalie Bartels and Hayden and Ellery Miller, as well as nieces and nephews.
Neva was preceded in death by her parents, husband Jim on December 8, 1977, brother Leon Williams and two sisters, Rosina Walker and Maxine Corder.
Neva attended rural schools in the Green City and Milan areas and graduated from Milan High School in 1941. She went on to work for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for several years during WWII, first in Kirksville and later transferring to Chicago, where she worked until her marriage. Following their marriage, Neva and Jim moved to Colorado for a short time before returning to Queen City and building a home on the Slaughter family farm.
After the death of her husband, Neva worked for several years at the Schuyler County Nursing Home and for Green Thumb of Northeast Missouri. She dearly loved her family and was proud of each and every one. She was a member of the Queen City Baptist Church. She was a sweet, caring, kind and compassionate mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She will be sadly missed by family and friends.
A memorial service will be held at the Dooley Funeral Home on Friday, December 7, 2012 at 1:30 pm. Interment will follow at the Queen City Cemetery.
