Marguerite Mary (Buban) Prather
1920 - 2009

Marguerite Mary Prather, 88, of Kirksville, Missouri, passed away Tuesday (November 3, 2009) at Twin Pines Adult Care Center in Kirksville.
 
The daughter of Tony Charles and Bessie (Sekardi) Buban Sr., she was born November 25, 1920 in Kirksville, Missouri. On November 23, 1945 in Kirksville, Missouri, she was united in marriage to Harvey O. “Bill” Prather who preceded her in death on September 4, 1993.
 
She was also preceded in death by her parents; three brothers, Sam, Steve and Tony Jr. Buban and three sisters, Marie Knerschield, Helen Pavesic and Josephine Grider.
 
Marguerite is survived by one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Sue Buban of Kirksville, MO; two sisters, Katherine Scudder of Marshall, MO and Louise Buban of Kirksville, MO as well several nieces and nephews.
 
Marguerite received her education in the Willard Grade School, Kirksville R-III Jr. High School and Kirksville R-III High School. Before her marriage in 1945, Marguerite was employed two years at International Shoe Factory. She loved playing fast pitch softball with her sisters, Katherine, Josephine and Louise. Marguerite played 3rd base a number of years for the following teams: Herman Girls of Kirksville, with 24 wins and 2 losses in 1935, 1937 with the Kirksville All Stars (winning the Missouri State Title) and went to Soldiers Field for the Nationals in Chicago, IL, 1940 played for Thames Girls of St. Joseph, MO (winning 3 State Titles), 1941 with Kirksville All Stars winning a State Title and going to Michigan for Nationals, 1942 with Swift Girls of St. Joseph, MO (winning a State Title),  1943 with Lewis Girls of Hannibal, MO (winning a State Title) and also played for Edina, MO Cardinals, 1944 with St. James of Kansas City, MO (winning a State Title), 1945 with War Battery of Kansas City, MO (winning a State Title), and in 1945 got an offer to play professional for Caterpillar Tractor of Peoria, IL.
 
Marguerite enjoyed fishing and gardening and was a member of the Mary Immaculate Catholic Church of Kirksville.
 
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m. Sunday (November 8, 2009) at Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville, with Father Chris Cordes presiding. Interment will follow the service at Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville.
 
Family will receive friends one hour before service time on Sunday (November 8, 2009) in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.
 
Pallbearers will be Kenny Layman, Tom King, Chuck Scudder, Brian King, Patrick King and Cliff VanCleve. Honorary bearers will be Frank Buban and Dr. Norman Clarkson.
 
Expressions of sympathy in memory of Marguerite Prather may be made to Twin Pines Adult Care Center Christmas Fund or to the Adair County Historical Society. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
