Vernal Lee (Wilson) Shumaker
1928 – 2009

Vernal Lee Shumaker, 81, of Independence, Missouri, formerly of Kirksville, passed away Wednesday (October 28, 2009) at her home.

The daughter of Virgil and Ival Loeta (Cowan) Wilson, she was born February 12, 1928 in Kirksville, Missouri. On June 27, 1950, Vernal was united in marriage to Beryl Eugene Shumaker who preceded her in death on November 13, 1979.

She was also preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Faye Calhoun and Virgie Lohr.

Vernal is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Jeff and Jane Shumaker of Salina, KS; one daughter, Sherri Shumaker of Independence, MO; four grandchildren, Jason Shumaker and wife Kate, Kevin Shumaker, Jennifer Shumaker and Matthew Bartlett and wife, Kelli as well as one great-grandson, Benjamin Bartlett.

Vernal was a graduate from the Kirksville High School. After graduating, she began working at Florsheim Shoe Factory where she was employed several years, before going to work in the housekeeping department at Grim-Smith Hospital where she was employed until 1998.
 
She loved to cook and read and was an avid follower of the TV show, Dancing with the Stars. Vernal also loved spending time with her dog Lucy.

Vernal was a past member of the First Baptist Church of Kirksville.

Graveside services will be held 11:00 a.m. Monday (November 2, 2009) at Maple Hills Cemetery in Kirksville, with Pastor Sheila Swafford officiating.

Family will receive friends on Monday, one hour before the graveside service in the chapel of Travis-Noe Funeral Home in Kirksville.

Expressions of sympathy in memory of Vernal Shumaker may be made to the charity of the donor’s choice. Memorials may be left at or mailed to Travis-Noe Funeral Home, P.O. Box 306, Kirksville, MO 63501.
