President's Day Soup Supper
The Russell-Strait American Legion Post #483 is holding a soup supper on February 22,2013 in honor of Presidents’ Day. Proceeds from this annual supper help support manyof the community-based projects of the Milton-based American Legion Post, which include sponsorship of a bi-monthly blood drive, as well as a community-wide celebration held, yearly, in early September. The Legion Hall is a community gathering spot for seniors, as well as providing facilities for the senior meal site. Various civic organizations in Milton use the American Legion Hall for fund raising, and community meetings. They march in several parades that are held throughout Van Buren County, which they consider an honor. Members of the #483 Post volunteer their time to provide funeral honors for veterans in the Cantril and Milton area. They post an Avenue of the Flags in two local cemeteries for the national holidays that honor those who have served their country, as well as celebrating our nation’s heritage. For Memorial Day, each grave of a veteran, in at least four cemeteries, is marked with a small individual flag, personally placed by members. Memorial Day services are held at the cemeteries in Cantril and Milton with a full contingent of veteran members who have served from World War II to the Iraq-Afghanistan wars.In addition to having some of the best soup in Milton, the American Legion Post #483 will be holding a drawing for a classic, Western-style, Henry .22 caliber repeating rifle, with a quality walnut stock. The Henry Rifle Company, in business since the 1860s, proudly makes this rifle in the U.S.A. in New Jersey. Drawing tickets are available for a donation from any Legion member—one for $5.00, or a book of five for $20.00. Winners need not be present at the time of the drawing.
