Four reasons why Iowa's future looks good
Hello, this is State Senator Becky Schmitz.
Last spring, the Legislature approved a balanced budget. Since then, the deepening national recession has caused state revenues to fall sharply. The October estimate of this year's state income is $415 million less than the March estimate.
In response, Governor Culver ordered a 10 percent across-the-board budget cut. And during the upcoming 2010 session, the Legislature will continue to say "no" many times so we can balance the state budget while protecting the most critical services and not raising taxes.
Despite these tough times, I'm optimistic about Iowa's future. Here's how we've been laying the foundation for long-term economic growth before this recession began.
First, our responsible approach to state finances means Iowa is in better shape than most states.
Second, we have an excellent education system and, we are working to protect it.
Third, Iowa is solving the health care problems now understood to be an economic threat.
Fourth, our efforts to jumpstart Iowa's renewable energy industry and rebuild after last year's natural disasters are showing results. CNBC recently ranked Iowa as the fourth best state in the nation for business.
When the Legislature convenes in January, we will work together -- Republicans and Democrats -- to balance the budget without raising taxes.
We will stay focused on supporting the middle class, quality schools, good-paying jobs, and affordable health care.
I'm Becky Schmitz, your state senator, thank you.
