BLOOMFIELD, IOWA -- One local softball team thinks there's more to life than just playing a game.
When the senior members of the Davis County softball team saw a competitor using a game as a fundraising opportunity, they decided the could do the same.
They chose to raise money to fight breast cancer. They created baskets to auction off, convinced a local company, Stampede Graphics to design a special pink uniform and t-shirts to sell and organized a bake sale, all centered around their June 21 series of games with Eddyville-Blakesburg.
The money raised from the auction will be dontated to the Davis County Hospital's Walk for Life Fund. Hospital spokeperson Kathi Scott tells KTVO that the fund provides mammograms for uninsured and underinsured women.
Mustangs softball coach Jason Lough says the effort says more about his team's character than its won-loss record.
"I put the ball in their court and they ran with it so to speak. These girls have been pretty good leaders throughout the year and it show what kind of leaders they are going to be in the future," Lough said.
The event kicks-off with the freshman game at 4:30. The basket auction will be held between the freshman and J.V. game, around five-thirty.
