KIRKSVILLE, MO (AP) -- A.T. Still University’s Kirksville Osteopathic Alumni Association (KOAA) Board of Directors presented its legendary awards on November 1 at the annual KOAA Luncheon and Assembly meeting. It was held in conjunction with the American Osteopathic Association Convention in Orlando, Fla.

Sue Magruder, M.A., of Kirksville, Mo., received an Honorary KOAA Membership. Mrs. Magruder has been an educator or involved with higher education since receiving her B.S.E. from Truman State University in 1955, where she met and married her husband, Jack Magruder, current ATSU president. She has taught at the Kirksville elementary schools as well as Truman State University, and supervised student teachers in Missouri and Iowa. Mrs. Magruder says she admires the KCOM alumni and students for how the older generations take care of the younger ones.

“That is so important, and it may be that this profession, more than any other, depends on that in order to keep the standards high and the knowledge sharp, and because of that, to have them offer me an honorary membership just means double or triple,” said Mrs. Magruder.

David Patterson, M.Ed., B.S.E., of Kirksville, Mo., was also awarded an Honorary KOAA Membership. Patterson has been employed at ATSU since 1992 when he began as an instructional coordinator. Since 2008, he has served as the director for simulation assessment in the ATSU-KCOM Human Simulation Laboratory.

Eric J. Snider, D.O., C-NMM/OMM, of Kirksville, Mo., was another Honorary KOAA Membership recipient. Dr. Snider joined the ATSU-KCOM faculty in 2002 as an assistant profession and is now an associate professor for the Department of Neurobehavioral Sciences. He also serves as an admissions interviewer for ATSU-KCOM.

Betty Jo White, D.O., FACOS, of Pennsylvania was also presented with an Honorary KOAA Membership. Dr. White is credited as the first woman in the osteopathic profession to complete a general surgical residency (1967). She has been a long-time supporter of the Museum of Osteopathic Medicine and has served on the museum’s National Advisory Board.

Philip L. Shettle, D.O., FOCOO, of Clearwater, Fla., was selected as Alumnus of the Year for 2011. Dr. Shettle is a past clinical instructor of ophthalmology, former member of the KOAA Board of Directors, and former officer and voting member of the ATSU-KCOM Board of Trustees, among other University roles.

“I have very many fond memories and a lot of pride in both the osteopathic and the Kirksville family, and I would like to say that to follow other members who have received this award, members that I have respected and admired, is a real honor. I am proud to be part of that distinguished group,” Dr. Shettle said.

Robert J. Theobald, Jr., Ph.D., was honored with the Living Tribute Award. Dr. Theobald has been employed at ATSU-KCOM since 1976. As the chair of pharmacology, he has conducted extensive research on the regulation and interaction of the urinary tract.

Stanley E. Grogg, D.O., FACOP, FAAP, of Tulsa, Okla., is a recipient of the KOAA Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Grogg has served in various University roles such as past KOAA Board of Directors president and member, ATSU alumni ambassador, and president of the ATSU Alumni Association.

Georgia A. Walter, B.S., D.O. (Hon.) and Francis “Bucky” M. Walter Jr., M.A., B.S., D.O. Ed. (Hon.), both of Kirksville, Mo., are also recipients of the KOAA Distinguished Service Award. Mrs. Walter served as the director of the A.T. Still Memorial Library from 1969-1986 and upon retirement was named emerita director of the library. Mr. Walter served as ATSU-KCOM dean of students from 1961-1986 and upon retirement, was named emeritus dean of students.
