KIRKSVILLE, MO. -- A Kirksville man convicted of shooting at two Kirksville Police officers, while they were attempting to arrest him, has filed an appeal.

Jerod Reed, 20, of Kirksville was convicted by Circuit Judge Russell Steele in a bench trial. Steele found Reed guilty of two counts of first degree assault of a law enforcement officer, one count of armed criminal action and one count of resisting arrest. He was sentenced to serve 12 years in prison.

In his appeal filed by Columbia Attorney Craig Johnson, Reed claims there was insufficient evidence that he knew Kirksville Police detectives were law enforcement officers. The appeal also claims that there is insufficient evidence that he was attempting to cause injury to both detectives with a handgun that had just one bullet in it. Also, Reed's attorney says that if the court reverses the decision on the assault charges, then armed criminal action cannot be charged.

The Missouri Attorney General's Office, which handles all appeals, has not yet filed a response to the case.
