KIRKSVILLE -- Starting today 90 percent of Missouri residents will be able to access the 2-1-1 helpline.

2-1-1 is a number than anyone can call to find specific information and get referrals on issues related to health and human services.

For example, calling the 2-1-1 call center can help you find information on senior services, childcare, mental and physical health care resources, as well as where to find food banks and shelters.

The service is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 3 hundred and 65 days a year.

Nancy Pennington, the executive director of the United Way of Adair County says that the program helps local United Way offices find out what programs people need.

“So from a United Way standpoint, if people are calling for a particular program and it doesn't exist in our community, we can say ‘hey, a lot of people

are calling for this maybe we should get someone to start this program or help this program develop further or provide funds for that kind of thing.’  It's

going to help us stay strategic and focused with what we're doing down the road”.

The service is currently available for all AT&T, Century Tel, and Charter customers that use a landline.

But what about those without a landline?

Don’t worry you can call 1-800-427-4626 from your cell phone or from any other phone not yet connected with the 2-1-1 service.
